Probably a depiction of Beale’s expedition with camels from Texas to Los Angeles in the fall of 1857
A nice overview of the Camel Corps in California, although it omits the fact that the camels were a fixture in Los Angeles around the time of the Civil War. Around 1864, a few of them ended up living at adobe ranch in the northwest corner of Rancho La Brea, a spot that today is a few blocks south of the Sunset Strip. After a few months, however, Greek George Caralambo, one of the cameleers who had come over from the Mediterranean with the camels years earlier and then trekked with them from Texas to Los Angeles, set them free. They are said to have wandered the Hollywood Hills for the next 30 years.
